Volvelle was composed in 2015. Originally in the 5th order 3D ambisonics format, the tracks here are rendered for stereo loudspeakers and for headphones (binaural). It's important to select the correct version for your listening. The binaural version is not meant for loudspeakers. Volvelle slipped off my other releases, partly because of the incredibly deep bass (you'll love this if you have a subbass speaker!) and partly because it is more droney and slower moving than much of my other work. In these stereo tracks the bass has been tamed a little compared to the concert version that ideally needs 6 or 8
subbass.
Sound sources used in Volvelle are from flutes (some played by Bjørnar Habbestad, others raided from my 30 year archive of materials), from a rural village in the late evening, and from some sonification processes connected to the volvelle model used in this piece....more
what should have been originally released. the lo-fi nature works wonderfully in the record's favor... feels very natural. bailey plays off of the backing quite nicely! james
